Supporting Small-Scale Farmers to Become Seed Producers
APCO Partners with IFDC Supports Farmers in Seed Production
In a partnership with IFDC, funded by USAID, APCO designed and implemented a 6-month program to train and support two farmer unions in East Galabat Region, Gedaref State to produce Sorghum, Sesame and Soybean Seed. The program that ran from June through to December 2024 trained, financed and supported 440 farmers to become seed producers. It involved provision of inputs, machinery and in-class and field training across multiple levels. Both unions, through APCO’s support, were certified by the NSA and registered as seed producers and can now produce and sell certified seed.
The program was a kick-off to establishing a seed bank in the region that aims to increase availability and attainability of certified seed to boost farmer productivity.
